Job summary

Department of General Services (DGS) in Virginia seeks two Senior Scientists to join the Newborn Screening Laboratory team at DCLS, working Tuesday through Saturday on-site in Richmond. You will oversee high-complexity testing, QA/QC, staff training, and act as a technical lead for weekend workflows, ensuring timely reporting of results.

The role requires leadership, strong communication, and extensive experience in clinical lab testing and instrumentation.

Qualifications

• Significant knowledge and experience in clinical laboratory testing.
• Experience operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation.
• Experience with QA and QC procedures, including documenting and interpreting QC data.
• Experience training staff.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a Senior Scientist on the Saturday team with high independence and technical expertise.
• Perform and approve time-critical testing for all disorders.
• Oversee weekend workflow, collection card management, bench testing, troubleshooting, results release, and reporting.
• Perform high-complexity testing and coordinate testing for the group.
• Schedule and prioritize workflow to meet turnaround times.
• Review and approve data using the LIMS and mentor staff.
