Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking an Automation Engineer to design and implement SCADA systems for electric grid projects. You will plan, engineer, and design SCADA and communications layouts, develop HMIs, and coordinate with protection engineers to ensure reliable operations.

The role offers hybrid work with three days in the office and relocation support, where applicable. You will work with RTUs/IEDs, PACs, and network devices, producing documentation and optimizing systems with Python-based tools.

Qualifications

• 5 years of experience in design, configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting of substation SCADA and communication systems.
• Experience with SEL, Novatech, GE RTUs and software.
• Basic understanding of LAN/WAN devices and topology.
• Knowledge of DNP, Modbus, SEL, IEC-61850 (MMS/Goose) protocols – serial & IP based.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Engage in client projects to plan, engineer, and design SCADA and communications systems.
• Develop block diagrams, panel layouts, SCADA schematics, and fiber/network drawings.
• Review P&C drawings for SCADA system requirements.
• Develop data point lists for RTU/IED/master connections.
• Configure RTUs and PACs (SEL, Novatech, GE, SEL-2440/2411, etc.).
• Program HMI applications using tools like Diagram Builder, Inkscape, Wonderware.
• Coordinate with relay settings engineers on port settings for protection relays and meters.
• Develop network device configurations (Cisco, Siemens Ruggedcom, SEL).
• Troubleshoot SCADA network/communication systems remotely and onsite.
• Produce SCADA system and network documentation for projects.
• Develop automation tools (Python) to improve project efficiency.
• Stage and test integrated designs for interoperability with CIP-lab standards.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and guide project teams.
