Job summary

Sargent & Lundy seeks an Automation Engineer to design SCADA and communications systems for substation projects within our Electric Grid Infrastructure Services group. You will configure RTUs/IEDs, develop HMI programs, and create network diagrams.

You will collaborate with relay settings engineers, review protection schemes, and ensure CIP compliance. The hybrid role requires in-office presence three days a week, relocation assistance where needed, and travel up to 30% with mentoring

Qualifications

• 5 years' experience in design, configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting of substation SCADA and communication systems.
• Experience with SEL, Novatech, GE RTUs and software.
• Understanding of LAN/WAN devices and topology.
• Knowledge of DNP, Modbus, IEC-61850 protocols.
• Willingness to travel up to 30%.
• Proficiency with MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Plan, engineer, and design SCADA and communications systems for client projects.
• Develop communication block diagrams, panel layouts, SCADA AC & DC schematics, fiber detail drawings, and network drawings.
• Provide reviews/design input of P&C drawings for SCADA system requirements.
• Develop points lists for data transferred between RTUs, IEDs, and master station connections.
• Develop configurations for RTUs (SEL RTAC, Novatech OrionLX, SMP Gateway, GE-D20, etc.).
• Develop configurations for PACs – (SEL-2440/2411, etc.).
• Program HMI applications (SEL Diagram Builder, Inkscape, Wonderware, etc.).
• Coordinate with relay settings engineers for protection relays and meters.
• Develop network device configurations (Cisco, Siemens Ruggedcom, SEL).
• Troubleshoot SCADA network and communication systems (DNP, Modbus, SEL Protocol, IEC 61850, TCP/IP, UDP).
• Develop SCADA system and network documentation.
• Develop automation tools to improve project efficiency (Python, etc.).
• Stage, configure & test integrated systems designs for interoperability & CIP-aligned performance.
• Provide mentorship to less experienced engineers and participate in Communities of Practice.
