Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking an Automation Engineer to design SCADA and communications for Electric Grid Infrastructure projects. You will plan, engineer, and design SCADA systems, block diagrams, and HV/LV networking to meet project requirements.

The role involves HMI programming, RTU/PAC configurations, and collaboration with protective-relay engineers. Travel up to 30% and a hybrid work setup are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications, or Computer Systems Engineering.
• 8 years of experience in design, configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting of substation SCADA and communication systems.
• Experience with SEL, Novatech, & GE RTUs and software.
• Basic understanding of LAN/WAN devices and topology.
• Knowledge of DNP, Modbus, SEL, IEC-61850 (MMS/Goose) protocols – serial & IP based.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Ability & willingness to travel up to 30%.

Responsibilities

• Engage in fast-paced client projects to plan, engineer, & design SCADA and communications systems.
• Develop communication block diagrams, panel layouts, SCADA schematics, fiber details, and network drawings.
• Provide reviews/design input of P&C drawings for SCADA system requirements.
• Develop data transfer points lists between RTUs, IEDs, and master station connections.
• Develop configurations for RTUs (SEL RTAC, Novatech OrionLX, SMP Gateway, GE-D20).
• Develop configurations for PACs (SEL-2440/2411).
• Program HMIs (SEL Diagram Builder, Inkscape, Wonderware).
• Coordinate with relay settings engineers for protection relays, meters, IEDs.
• Develop network device configurations (Cisco, Siemens Ruggedcom, SEL).
• Perform troubleshooting of SCADA network & communication systems (DNP, Modbus, SEL, IEC-61850).
• Develop SCADA and network documentation for projects.
• Develop automation tools to improve project efficiency (Python).
• Stage, configure & test integrated designs per lab requirements.
• Ensure CIP compliance.
• Coordinate and mentor more junior engineers.
• Occasional travel to client and vendor offices.
