Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing in Toms River, NJ, is seeking a Senior Relay Technician with deep experience in protection and control for medium- and high-voltage substations. This role will be based in the field, leading testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities across customer sites.

You will guide crews through complex outage work, develop accurate test reports, and ensure safety and reliability in all field operations, with opportunities to mentor junior technicians and support project

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV).
• Knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Experience with modern relay test platforms.
• Understanding of utility safety rules and energized work practices.
• Ability to interpret wiring and logic drawings.
• Valid driver’s license; able to travel and lift up to 70 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety briefings and tailboards in the field.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes.
• Verify control and protection circuits for transformers, capacitor banks, and reactors.
• Support outage planning, energization, and restoration activities.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians; coordinate work with project teams.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports and field documentation.
• Participate in job walks, project estimating, and customer technical discussions.
• Serve as a technical resource and trainer for relay technicians.
