Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing seeks a Senior Relay Technician to safeguard the reliable operation of medium‑ and high‑voltage substations through advanced protective relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance. This role targets candidates with a utility background who can test and commission protection systems and lead field crews.

You will mentor onsite technicians, coordinate with project managers and utility customers, and travel regionally to customer sites.

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands‑on experience in protective relaying for utility substations
• Demonstrated experience testing medium‑to high‑voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV)
• Strong working knowledge of microprocessor‑based relays and modern relay test platforms
• Solid understanding of utility safety rules, energized work practices, and lockout/tagout procedures

Responsibilities

• Lead safety briefings and tailboards to reinforce a Safety First culture
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on medium‑ and high‑voltage systems
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure, bus)
• Verify control circuits for transformers, breakers, feeders, capacitors, and reactors
• Create and maintain precise test reports and settings, and support outage planning and restoration
