Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing seeks a Senior Relay Technician to lead protective relay testing, calibration, and commissioning for high-voltage substations. You will guide crews in outage work and ensure safety and reliability in field operations, including reporting and client coordination.

The role requires 5+ years in protective relaying, familiarity with 5kV–500kV systems, and a strong grasp of relay schemes. Travel and outdoor work are expected; a clean driving record is essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV).
• Strong working knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Experience with modern relay test platforms.
• Safety rules, energized work practices, and lockout/tagout knowledge.
• Ability to interpret protection diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring/logic drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead job briefings and safety tailboards to reinforce a Safety First culture.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on medium- to high-voltage systems.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure, bus).
• Verify control circuits for transformers, breakers, feeders, capacitors, and reactors.
• Support outage planning, switching coordination, energization, and restoration activities.
• Conduct event analysis, relay target review, and disturbance investigations.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians and coordinate with PMs, operators, and customers.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports and field documentation.
• Participate in job walks, project estimating, and customer technical discussions.
• Serve as technical resource and trainer for developing relay technicians.
