Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing in Grand Rapids, MI, is seeking a Senior Relay Technician to lead protective relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance for medium- and high‑voltage substations. The role requires deep utility experience, strong leadership, and a track record of safe, reliable operations across transmission systems.

You will mentor onsite crews, coordinate with project managers and clients, and deliver precise test reports and settings to support system reliability and outage

Qualifications

• 10+ years hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV).
• Strong knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Experience with modern relay test platforms.
• Understanding of utility safety rules and energized work practices.
• Ability to interpret wiring and logic drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead job briefings and safety tailboards; foster a safety culture.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on MV/HV systems.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure, bus protection).
• Verify control and protection circuits for transformers, circuit breakers, feeders, capacitors.
• Support outage planning, switching coordination, energization, and restoration.
• Event analysis, relay target review, disturbance investigations.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians; coordinate with PMs, system operators, and customers.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports, as-left settings, and field documentation.
• Participate in job walks, project estimating, and customer technical discussions.
• Serve as a technical resource and trainer for developing relay technicians.
