Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing seeks a Senior Relay Technician to ensure safe, reliable operation of substations through advanced protective relay testing and commissioning. You will lead field teams, plan outages, and drive high-quality test reports across utility sites.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in protection relaying, with HV testing experience and NETA credentials. Travel to customer sites and a strong safety focus are essential to success in this role.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems.
• Knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Ability to interpret protection diagrams and AC/DC schematics.
• Valid driver’s license; willingness to travel and work outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Lead job briefings and safety tailboards to reinforce a safety-first field culture.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on medium- and high-voltage systems.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, etc.).
• Verify control/protection circuits for transformers, circuit breakers, feeder relays, and capacitor banks.
• Support outage planning, switching, energization, and restoration activities.
• Lead onsite technicians and coordinate with PMs, operators, and customers.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports and field documentation.
• Participate in job walks, estimating, and customer technical discussions.
• Serve as a technical resource and trainer for developing relay technicians.
