Job summary

Overland AI in Seattle, WA seeks a Senior Backend Systems Engineer to own the real-time streaming backend for video and telemetry of remote-operated vehicles. You will design, implement, and operate low-latency pipelines across unreliable networks, ensuring safety and responsiveness for operators in mission-critical scenarios.

You will mentor engineers and shape standards while collaborating with robotics, autonomy, frontend, and hardware teams.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on backend, systems and networking.
• Expert-level Python and at least one systems language (C++, Go, or Rust).
• Deep experience shipping real-time video/telemetry streaming systems in production.
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and handling degraded links.
• Track record owning complex systems from design to deployment.

Responsibilities

• Design and build low-latency pipelines for video, telemetry, and feedback streaming.
• Design transport protocols for intermittent, high-latency links with graceful degradation.
• Tune latency, jitter, and throughput across encoding, transport, and decoding.
• Develop test and simulation tools to reproduce real network conditions.
• Add instrumentation and observability to measure stream health and link quality.
• Collaborate with robotics, autonomy, frontend, and hardware teams to define interfaces.
• Mentor engineers, lead technical design reviews, and set engineering standards.
