Job summary

Overland AI in Seattle seeks an experienced backend systems engineer to design, build, and operate real-time streaming infrastructure for remote vehicle operation. You will own the full path from vehicle to operator across unreliable networks, balancing latency, image quality, and bandwidth.

You will work where low-latency media, networking, and robotics intersect, making architecture decisions and writing production code to implement those choices. Lead technical design reviews and mentor peers.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with backend, systems, and networking.
• Expert-level skills in at least one systems programming language: C++, Go, or Rust.
• Experience designing and shipping real-time video/telemetry streaming systems in production.
• Understanding streaming for intermittent/degraded links including packet loss, jitter, and latency spikes.
• Knowledge of UDP/TCP, congestion control, NAT traversal, and trade-offs between reliable/unreliable delivery.
• Hands-on experience with video encoding/decoding (H.264/H.265/AV1) and latency/quality trade-offs.
• Experience profiling and optimizing performance-critical, concurrent code.

Responsibilities

• Design and build low-latency pipelines for video, telemetry, and feedback streaming between remote vehicles and operator stations.
• Design transport and session protocols for intermittent/high-latency links including graceful degradation and fast reconnection.
• Tune latency, jitter, and throughput across encoding, transport, and decoding.
• Build test/simulation tools to reproduce real network conditions (packet loss, outages).
• Add instrumentation/observability to measure stream health and link quality.
• Collaborate with robotics/autonomy/frontend/hardware teams to define interfaces and requirements.
• Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and help set engineering standards.
