Job summary

Markel is seeking an experienced professional liability claims professional in the US (Boston area) to handle complex cases from coverage inquiry through liability assessment and settlement. The role involves mediations or litigation, coordinating with defense counsel, underwriters, and internal teams to mitigate indemnity and expense exposure.

Requirements include a college degree (JD preferred) and 3+ years of claims or litigation experience.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues both verbally and in writing; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans.

Responsibilities

• Investigate, negotiate and settle complex primary and excess policy miscellaneous professional liability claims.
• Investigate and analyze coverage under primary and excess professional liability insurance policies; make coverage determinations; draft routine and complex coverage correspondence; communicate coverage positions.
• Manage litigation filed nationwide against insureds; appoint, direct and manage defense counsel; work toward expeditious and economical resolution of claims; assist vendor management, disbursement and legal collections teams.
• Communicate with underwriting to manage claims and alert of significant developments.
• Promptly communicate with Claims Manager on adverse case developments and provide information on pertinent issues affecting the product line.
• Collaborate with team; summarize complex issues; plan actions; communicate in writing and orally.
• Maintain and adhere to Markel’s guidelines and procedures; ensure internal reporting requirements.
• Contribute to initiatives and participate in agent related functions and meetings; participate in ongoing training of the claims examiners.
