Job summary

Markel is seeking a claims professional in the United States to resolve moderate to high complexity professional liability claims, including mediation and litigation. You’ll assess coverage, liability, and quantum, communicate developments to stakeholders, and support training within the unit.

The role requires 3+ years of claims or litigation experience, a college degree or professional designation, and the ability to work with minimal oversight. Travel is approximately 10%.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Sound comprehension of insurance coverage posed by professional liability policies.
• Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues verbally and in writing; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans.
• Experience in determining contractual obligations, insurance coverage analyses, and investigations.
• Ability to manage complex litigation, set loss and expense reserves and evaluate settlement values.
• Work collaboratively and as a team player willing to assist within the Unit and Professional Liability Division as needed.
• Ability to proactively self-manage a caseload.
• Travel required as necessary (approximately 10%).

Responsibilities

• Investigate, negotiate and settle complex policy professional liability claims for lawyers, accountants and financial advisors insureds.
• Investigate and analyze coverage under primary and excess professional liability policies; draft coverage correspondence; communicate positions to stakeholders.
• Manage nationwide litigation against insureds; direct defense counsel; resolve claims expeditiously and economically.
• Communicate with underwriting to manage claims and alert of significant developments.
• Provide information to Claims Manager on adverse developments affecting professional liability product lines.
• Convey summations of complex issues and develop action plans both orally and in writing.
