Job summary

Markel Corporation is seeking a Senior Claims Examiner to handle moderate to high complexity claims across multiple liability lines in a hybrid US environment. You will analyze policy coverage, manage defense teams, and drive timely settlements while monitoring budgets and regulatory requirements.

The role requires a JD or advanced degree and a track record in complex casualty claims, with strong negotiation and analytical skills to support strategic risk management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; JD or advanced degree preferred.
• 4–6 years of complex casualty claims handling experience.
• Strong knowledge of coverage analysis and policy interpretation.
• Experience managing litigated claims and working with outside counsel.
• Ability to evaluate liability, damages, and exposure for high-severity matters.

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of environmental, products liability, life sciences, toxic tort, professional liability, and general liability claims of moderate to high complexity.
• Analyze policy language and coverage issues, including reservation of rights letters and coverage position recommendations.
• Evaluate liability, damages, and exposure to establish and maintain reserves.
• Oversee defense and coverage counsel, consultants, and experts as appropriate.
• Develop claim handling strategies to drive timely outcomes; participate in mediations and settlements.
• Prepare claim summaries, large loss reports, and management updates.
