Job summary

Markel in the United States is seeking an experienced professional liability claims manager to investigate, negotiate, and settle complex claims for lawyers, accountants, and financial advisors. You will analyze coverage, manage nationwide litigation, and coordinate defense counsel while adhering to company guidelines.

The role requires strong communication, analytical, and leadership skills, with travel about 10% and US work authorization. JD or professional designation is preferred.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional liability claims or litigation experience preferred.
• Excess liability (quota share, first layer and high layer) claims or litigation experience a plus.
• College degree and/or professional designation required; JD preferred.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Sound comprehension of insurance coverage posed by professional liability policies.
• Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues verbally and in writing.
• Ability to recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans.
• Experience determining contractual obligations, analyzing insurance coverage, and conducting investigations.
• Ability to manage complex litigation, set loss and expense reserves, and evaluate settlement values.
• Ability to work collaboratively and assist within the Unit and Professional Liability Division.
• Ability to proactively self-manage a caseload.
• Approximately 10% travel required as necessary.
• US Work Authorization required.

Responsibilities

• Investigate, negotiate, and settle complex primary and excess policy professional liability claims for lawyers, accountants, and financial advisors.
• Investigate and analyze coverage under primary and excess professional liability insurance policies.
• Make coverage determinations and draft routine and complex coverage correspondence.
• Communicate coverage positions to policyholders and other stakeholders.
• Manage claims involving coverage litigation.
• Manage litigation filed nationwide against insureds.
• Appoint, direct, and manage defense counsel.
• Work toward expeditious and economical resolution of claims.
• Assist claims vendor management, disbursement, and legal collections teams with defense counsel, bill payment, and collection issues.
• Communicate with underwriting regarding claims and significant developments.
• Communicate adverse case developments and pertinent product-line issues to the Claims Manager.
• Maintain and adhere to Markel guidelines and procedures.
• Adhere to internal reporting requirements.
• Implement initiatives, discussions, and action plans from the Claims Manager.
• Participate in agent-related functions and meetings.
• Provide training and serve as a technical referral point for team members.
• Participate in ongoing training and development of claims examiners.
