Job summary

Markel seeks a seasoned claims professional to resolve moderate to high complexity claims, from coverage inquiries through liability assessment and quantum analysis. You will mitigate indemnity and expense exposure while keeping stakeholders informed of developments and outcomes.

The role increases responsibility, with authority for reserve decisions within limits and the ability to train teammates as a technical resource; travel to mediations and trials is possible.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years of claims handling experience
• JD or advanced degree is a plus

Responsibilities

• Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents.
• Directs and monitors assignments to experts and outside counsel, ensuring effective vendor and litigation management.
• Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions.
• Prepare coverage position letters on matters typically in litigation.
• Utilizes investigation and settlement techniques for timely closure; reviews documentation and policy provisions.
• Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and damages.
• Provides timely service throughout the life cycle of the claim and responds to inquiries.
• Evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine insured exposure.
• Sets reserves within authority or makes recommendations to manager.
• Negotiates and settles claims typically in litigation.
• Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information.
• Presents at roundtables to senior claims leaders and underwriters on cases going to trial.
• Participates in special projects or assists teammates as requested.
• Travels to mediations, trials, and conferences as required.
• Coordinates loss information for stakeholders and presents at meetings with underwriters.
