Job summary

NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is seeking a Senior Laboratory Assistant (Phlebotomy) for the 11pm–7am shift. You will assist lab staff with day-to-day operations, including specimen management, inventory control, and communication with providers and laboratories.

Responsibilities include screening and accessioning specimens in LIS, maintaining supplies, proper receipt and storage, and front-end processing of samples for analysis.

Qualifications

• High School Degree with biology/chemistry credits required.
• Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid.
• Experience with intake/accessioning and handling biological specimens.
• Proficiency with computer applications including Excel and Word.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for screening and accessioning specimens in the LIS as described in the Lab Assistant Job Description.
• Maintains an adequate supply of all general laboratory items and department reagents/materials; communicates needs to supervisor.
• Ensures proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials; receives goods and documents per policy.
• Understands specimen requirements and communicates with providers; documents cancellations or rejections.
• Assures specimen quality prior to processing.
• Calls provider to confirm or clarify requests and places orders as required.
• Responsible for front end processing of all samples (labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, loading onto tests).
• Responsible for back-end processing and storage/disposal of samples; logs temperature/humidity for equipment.
• Cleans lab surfaces and equipment; maintains required logs.
• Answers phones and assists callers with test requirements, availability, and turnaround time.
• Accesses automated test platforms to check status of samples.
• Assists in blood product modification and inventory management.
• Performs Phlebotomy services for inpatients.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
