Job summary

Rivian seeks a Passive Safety System Design Engineer to own the passive safety architecture for next‑gen electric vehicles at our Palo Alto site. You will craft high‑level requirements, drive features from concept to vehicle readiness, and work with HW/SW, Homologation, and safety teams to meet crash safety goals.

You will validate prototype hardware, document the architecture, and support DFMEA with a data‑driven approach in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• BS/MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of experience with electrical systems design.
• Experience planning, writing and executing test procedures.
• Ability to troubleshoot sensors, actuators and digital signals; root-cause analysis.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary trade studies; familiarity with ISO 26262.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop features for the Passive Safety System Restraints Control Module (RCM).
• Drive technologies from concept to vehicle-ready maturity.
• Interface with Homologation, Functional Safety, and Compliance to extract system requirements.
• Collaborate with HW/SW engineers to design safety-critical systems that meet crash safety goals.
• Own and document the system architecture and ensure manufacturability and traceability.
• Perform hands-on design and validation of prototype hardware; iterate designs via test vehicles.
• Evaluate failure modes; lead integration and validation planning and execution.
• Engage in safety/reliability reviews and support DFMEA to improve design reliability.
