Job summary

Transwestern in Alexandria, VA seeks a Lead Building Engineer to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on building systems. This on-site role requires oversight of engineering staff and coordination with the Chief Engineer and Property Manager.

Responsibilities include evaluating work orders, implementing preventive maintenance, monitoring HVAC, electrical and fire safety systems, and ensuring minimal downtime for client spaces. Strong technical and communication skills required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 2+ years of related experience or trade school training.
• Minimum 5 years building maintenance experience.
• Appropriate license/permit for trade (e.g. Journeyman/Master Electrician).
• Experience in HVAC, boilers, pumps, refrigerant systems and water systems.
• Knowledge of energy management systems and building automation.
• Understand HVAC, electrical and building automation systems.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills.
• Good communication and customer service abilities.
• May require shift work and on-call duties.
• Lifting up to 50 lbs and climbing stairs.

Responsibilities

• Review daily work orders and assign tasks; monitor recurring issues.
• Oversee engineering staff to ensure complete, functional client spaces.
• Develop preventive maintenance programs for building systems.
• Inspect fire alarms, HVAC, and plumbing to meet design specs.
• Estimate time/materials for repairs; manage supplies and orders.
• Coordinate with Chief Engineer/Property Manager; plan downtime with clients.
• Perform repairs and preventive maintenance; keep records.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and coordinate needed support.
• Maintain energy management practices to minimize operating costs.
