Job summary

CENIC is seeking a Senior Network Operations Engineer to join its Network Operations Center in California. The role focuses on handling high-importance incidents, mentoring engineers, and driving improvements to NOC tooling and processes.

The position requires 6+ years in network operations, CCNP/JNCIP-level routing knowledge, and experience with DWDM/DCI. It operates in a 24x7 environment with a strong emphasis on reliability and cross-functional coordination.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline with 6+ years of experience.
• 5+ years of experience in network operations in a 24x7 environment.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex, multi-layer network incidents (IP, MPLS, optical/transport).
• Strong background with BGP, OSPF, or IS-IS and IP Routing at CCNP/JNCIP level.
• Experience with DWDM optical line systems and DCI deployments.
• Experience with incident management processes, ticketing systems, escalation procedures, and documentation standards in a NOC environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary escalation point for Network Operations Engineers, providing technical guidance and hands-on troubleshooting support for issues beyond standard triage.
• Lead the resolution of complex, ambiguous, or long-running incidents, coordinating cross-team input and driving to closure.
• Own and execute strategic projects to improve NOC tooling, workflows, and operational efficiency, including monitoring and key systems ownership (Zabbix, Jira, CONC).
• Cover standard shift triage duties to support staffing shortfalls and maintain service levels.
• Provide triage oversight during shifts when a supervisor is unavailable, ensuring proper escalations and documentation.
• Document complex incident resolutions and escalation outcomes for the knowledge base and post-incident reviews.
• Mentor NOC staff and promote best practices across shifts and teams.
