Job summary

The City of Pasadena is seeking a customer-focused Building Official who leads the Building & Safety Division with strong regulatory leadership, responsive service, and efficient permitting to meet the needs of residents, businesses, and institutions.

The ideal candidate will balance life safety with a business-minded approach to development and will manage budgets, staff, and cross-department collaboration while driving continuous improvement in plan review and inspection processes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, public administration, or closely related field.
• Five years of experience with a governmental agency as Building Official, Plans Examiner, or Senior Inspector, with at least three years in supervision.
• Previous experience as Building Official for a full-service city is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plans and directs building plan review and inspection staff to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations governing safety and construction.
• Prepares and delivers presentations and reports to the community, City Council, subcommittees, and stakeholders on codes, permitting, inspection, and regulatory matters.
• Provides information on building regulations, permits, and procedures and drafts code regulations.
• Participates in meetings on proposed projects through staff review and related meetings.
• Resolves field and office concerns regarding interpretation of codes and regulations.
• Prepares and presents reports on inspection activities; develops divisional procedures and ensures compliance.
• Develops and administers the annual budget for the Building and Safety Division.
