Job summary

City of Sarasota is seeking a Building Official to oversee the Building and Permitting Divisions, plan and supervise code compliance programs, and ensure compliance with building, fire, and safety codes. The role includes budget development, plan review, and representing the department withCity leadership and community groups.

The incumbent will review construction in flood plains, issue occupancy certificates, and respond to complaints while leading staff and guiding strategic building

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required in Civil Engineering, Building Construction, Architecture or related field.
• Ten years progressively responsible experience in building construction, engineering or architecture, five years in supervisory/managerial role.
• Must be certified as Building Official within six months of appointment.
• Must have or obtain Florida Fire Inspector certification within one year.
• Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Director in planning, directing, and evaluating Building and Permitting programs and staff.
• Participate in budgeting, prioritization, and resource allocation for the department.
• Act as Building Official as defined in City Code and oversee building inspection programs.
• Review plans in flood plains and FEMA inspections for flood insurance compliance.
• Issue certificates of occupancy and respond to building-related complaints.
• Represent the department to the City Manager, City Commission and public groups.
