Job summary

The City of Sarasota seeks a seasoned Building Official to lead the Building and Permitting Divisions. You will plan, supervise, and evaluate programs, ensuring compliance with Building, Fire, Mechanical, Plumbing, Gas, NEC, and Life Safety codes.

You will review plans, manage budgets, coordinate staff, and represent the department to City leadership and public groups. Requires advanced credentials and extensive supervisory experience in building construction and code enforcement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, building construction, architecture or related field.
• Ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in building construction/engineering/architecture; five (5) years in supervisory/managerial role.
• Must be certified as a Building Official within six (6) months of appointment.
• Must have or obtain Florida Fire Inspector certification within one (1) year.
• Valid Florida driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Director in planning and supervising Building and Permitting Compliance programs and staff.
• Act as Building Official and Chief Building Official for inspection and code compliance programs.
• Review plans, inspect construction, issue occupancy/Completion certificates, and respond to complaints.
• Represent the Department to City management, boards, and public groups as needed.
• Supervise budgeting, long-range planning, and department policy development.
