Job summary

The City of Sarasota seeks a seasoned building official to oversee Building and Permitting divisions, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. You will supervise staff, manage programs, and act as the Building Official per the City Code, coordinating with management and community stakeholders.

You will also assist in budget formulation, priority setting, and resource allocation, while conducting plan reviews and investigations to maintain safe building practices citywide.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Construction, Architecture or related field.
• Ten years progressively responsible experience in building construction, engineering or architecture, five years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
• Must be certified as a Building Official within six months of appointment.
• Must have or be able to obtain certification as a Florida Fire Inspector within one year.
• Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Director, Development Services in planning, directing, managing, supervising and evaluating all Building and Permitting Compliance programs and staff.
• Acts as Building Official as set forth in the Sarasota City Code.
• Plans, directs and supervises the City's building inspection programs and staff, including review of codes and compliance.
• Issues certificates of occupancy and completion and responds to complaints regarding building construction and fire safety.
• Represents the Director to City management, boards, and community groups as required.
