Job summary

Cook County Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform high-complexity testing across multiple areas including POCT, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Banking, and Hematology Immunology within the Department of Pathology.

The MLS will provide technical guidance, develop or improve procedures, and ensure compliance with CLIA and other regulations, while maintaining quality controls and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field is required (official transcripts at interview).
• Must qualify as a Medical Technologist by CLIA; provide proof at interview.
• National certification from ASCP, AMT, or ABB as MLS/MT/GS; provide proof at interview.
• One year post-certification experience in two lab sections is required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including alternating weekends.

Responsibilities

• Perform highly responsible, complex procedures in all laboratory sections under general direction.
• Oversee and coordinate MLS staff in procedures requiring advanced expertise.
• Demonstrate correct, proper tasks and interpret reports, reports, and manuals as needed.
• Collaborate with supervisor to establish criteria and measures of technical proficiency and compliance.
• Assist in selecting and optimizing equipment and analyzers with vendors as needed.
• Implement QC systems and manage QC rules and corrective actions.
• Ensure adequate inventories and budget considerations; assist in evaluating new programs.
• Maintain safety procedures, waste management, and regulatory compliance.
