Job summary

Markel is seeking an Underwriter/Sr. Underwriter to professionally underwrite Inland Marine and Railroad risks, ensuring profitability within authority levels and guidelines.

Responsibilities include managing new business and renewals, collaborating with regional managers, and participating in audits. Candidates should have at least 3 years of relevant underwriting experience, strong communication, and MS Office proficiency.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting profitable Inland Marine/Railroad (rolling stock, property) business.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong presentation aptitude.
• Microsoft Office skills including Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline Railroad risks to ensure profitability.
• Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
• Manage the renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations.
• Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on accounts and recommendations.
• Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
• Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers; cross-sell opportunities within Markel.
