Job summary

Markel Group is seeking an Underwriter/Sr. Underwriter to help underwrite new business and renewals profitably within state guidelines. This role supports a fast-paced insurance environment and works with agents and brokers across the U.S.

Key duties include reviewing Railroad risks, underwriting new business for profit, managing renewals, and collaborating with regional managers and product leads on strategy, pricing, and procedures. We offer competitive benefits and a focus on development.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of Inland Marine/Railroad underwriting experience.
• Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Review and accept/decline railroad risks to ensure profitability.
• Underwrite and select new business to generate profit.
• Manage renewal book and apply corrective measures.
• Communicate with regional managers and product line leaders.
• Participate in audits/underwriting meetings.
• Build relationships with key producers.
• Cross-sell Markel products through divisions.
• Review competitor pricing and market Markel offerings.
