Job summary

Markel is seeking an Underwriter/Sr. Underwriter to help profitably underwrite Inland Marine and Railroad risks across the U.S. You will evaluate new business and renewals, use underwriting tools, and guide stakeholders on profitability and risk selection.

You will collaborate with regional managers and product leaders, participate in audits, and mentor peers. The role requires strong communication, analytical skills, and up to 25% travel.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting Inland Marine/Railroad (rolling stock, property) business.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression to higher responsibilities.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong presentation aptitude.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline Railroad risks to ensure profitability.
• Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
• Manage the renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations.
• Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on accounts and producers.
• Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
• Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers.
• Cross-sell opportunities with other Markel divisions and promote products.
• Review forms and pricing of competitors and market the Markel product.
