Job summary

Markel seeks an experienced Underwriting Specialist to underwrite inland marine risks and renewals profitably within established guidelines. You will analyze submissions, assess exposure, and determine pricing while collaborating with management and producers across the Midwest region.

The role demands a strong technical background, excellent communication, and the ability to mentor less experienced underwriters. Occasional travel and a focus on profitability are key aspects of this position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and industry designations (proven, outstanding experience can be substituted for education)
• Proven outstanding reputation with retail distribution
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
• Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills

Responsibilities

• Review inland marine risks to ensure profitability.
• Communicate with underwriting management on accounts and producers; make recommendations.
• Underwrite new business for underwriting profit; review submissions for exposure and risk.
• Underwrite renewal business; review terms, conditions and pricing; handle account servicing.
• Monitor profitability and production; ensure book of business health.
• Develop relationships within region and product line; participate in audits or meetings.
• Cross-sell opportunities across Markel divisions; mentor junior underwriters.
