Job summary

AES Corporation in the United States is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to oversee HV substation design for renewable projects and ensure compliance with interconnection requirements. The role focuses on high voltage design oversight, coordination with EPCs, utilities, and project teams, with significant field involvement.

Ideal candidates have a BS in EE with power systems, 7+ years in HV substation design, strong leadership, and familiarity with ETAP/PLS-CADD/ASPEN.

Qualifications

• BS in Electrical Engineering with power systems emphasis.
• 7+ years in substation design or HV physical/controls.
• 2+ years in HV project engineering roles.
• Read HV schematics for breakers and transformers.
• Knowledge of grid integration and renewables requirements.
• Strong ability to lead technical discussions with EPCs/utilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction for HV substations and lines (35kV–500kV).
• Establish and maintain relationships with HV contractors and utilities.
• Review EPC designs for compliance with interconnection requirements and standards.
• Review power-system studies (load flow, short circuit, harmonics, TOV, insulation coordination).
• Coordinate with interconnection providers to meet Transmission Provider requirements.
• Support commissioning by reviewing testing and coordinating with utilities/ISOs.
• Work with project teams across PM, development, permitting, real estate, finance.
• Travel ~25%; projects mainly in Eastern/Central US.
