Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Shift Lieutenant to supervise security staff and inmates in housing units, ensuring custody and control during daily operations. Under general supervision, you will conduct inspections for security, safety and sanitation, investigate misconduct, conduct counts, and prepare evaluations and reports.

Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training are required after hire; a high school diploma is required and a related degree may substitute for experience; the department

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; a related bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.
• 18 months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for half of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Supervise security personnel assigned to housing units and inmate custody.
• Inspect living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and staff.
• Counsel, discipline, and train subordinate staff to standards.
• Prepare reports and employee evaluations as needed.
• Perform Shift Lieutenant duties when necessary.
