Job summary

The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways seeks a Highway Superintendent to oversee all operations, budgets, staff and contracts for highways. The role reports to senior leadership and directs policy and program delivery across bureaus.

Responsibilities include developing annual and five-year improvement programs, rights-of-way, contract plans, traffic controls, and safety, while ensuring compliance with county policies.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of experience in civil and highway engineering, construction engineering, maintenance engineering, or directly related experience.
• Current registration in the State of Illinois as a Licensed Professional Engineer or Licensed Structural Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the preparation and development of the annual and five year improvement program for highways to ensure highway capacity and safety.
• Oversee the acquisition of the necessary rights of way and easements for all highway projects.
• Direct the preparation of contract plans, specifications and estimates for all highway projects.
• Operate roadway systems by establishing proper traffic controls and issuing permits for work.
• Oversee the development of an annual operating budget for the department and monitors compliance with same.
