Job summary

Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways is seeking an experienced Highway Superintendent to manage the department’s operations, budgets, staff, and contracts for roads and highways in Cook County. The role includes briefing senior leadership on projects and policy implementation across bureaus.

Responsibilities cover highway program development, budget oversight, and ensuring compliance with county policies, contracts, and safety standards, with leadership across multiple teams.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in civil and highway engineering, construction engineering, maintenance engineering, or directly related experience.
• Current registration in the State of Illinois as a Licensed Professional Engineer or Licensed Structural Engineer

Responsibilities

• Oversee the preparation and development of the annual and five year improvement program for highways to ensure highway capacity and safety.
• Oversee the acquisition of rights of way and easements for highway projects.
• Direct the preparation of contract plans, specifications and estimates for highway projects.
• Select professional services to ensure highway capacity and safety and supervise contractors to ensure contract compliance.
• Operate roadway systems by establishing proper traffic controls and issuing permits for work.
• Oversee the physical maintenance of the highway system through preventative maintenance programs.
