Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation in Suffolk, VA, seeks a Project Inspector to coordinate, schedule, and inspect highway construction projects, ensuring quality per plans and specifications for a safe travelling public.

You will work under supervision to manage public relations, traffic changes, and contractor coordination while ensuring environmental controls, safety, and DBE/EEO compliance are met. This role emphasizes detailed documentation and project closeouts.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and the general public.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction contracts and other project management documents.
• Ability to record and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence.
• Ability to work in a team environment and independently while overseeing and guiding others.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate, schedule and inspect highway construction phases to ensure quality per plans and specifications.
• Communicate with VDOT and external support staff; manage public concerns and notify changes in traffic plans.
• Ensure environmental controls, safety, erosion and DBE/EEO guidelines are followed and properly documented.
• Oversee materials testing and ensure pay items reflect work performed; maintain as-built drawings and project diaries.
• Assist project inspectors and construction managers in coordinating and closing out projects.
• Maintain project documentation and support quarterly project performance reviews.
