Job summary

VDOT in Virginia is seeking an experienced highway project inspector to oversee all phases of construction, ensuring quality and safety in line with plans and specifications. You will support the engineering program and coordinate with staff, contractors and the public on traffic changes and project milestones.

The role emphasizes adherence to CDs, environmental and OSHA/VOSH safety standards, meticulous record-keeping, and effective use of inspection equipment and project management tools.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the public.
• Maintain detailed records and project files.
• Read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans and specs.
• Knowledge of construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Mathematics knowledge including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Certification within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Safety shoes required.
• Proficiency with computers and software applications.

Responsibilities

• Inspect highway construction and maintenance projects under supervision to ensure quality per plans and specs.
• Communicate with staff, contractors and the public regarding traffic and project updates.
• Ensure compliance with CDs, environmental, safety and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor materials testing and maintain project documentation and diaries.
• Serve as technical resource guiding field staff on plans, specs and safety policies.
