Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking a Highway Construction Inspector to independently coordinate, inspect, and manage all phases of routine and complex highway projects in Virginia. You will ensure quality and safety, oversee testing, and maintain meticulous project records while interfacing with VDOT and the public.

The role requires strong communication, the ability to read plans and contracts, and the capacity to work both independently and in a team.

Qualifications

Effective communication with VDOT personnel and the public.
Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway plans, contracts and project docs.
Ability to maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Safety shoes required and valid driver's license.
Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months.

Responsibilities

Independently coordinate, schedule and inspect highway construction to ensure quality.
Inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance under supervision.
Ensure compliance with environmental, erosion controls, safety, and DBE guidelines.
Oversee materials testing and ensure contractual compliance.
Maintain and issue project documentation, diaries and as-built drawings.
Provide direction to inspectors and coordinate with contractor to resolve issues.
Monitor project schedule, budget, and submittals; attend progress meetings.
