Job summary

SumUp is seeking a backend engineering leader to join the Commercial Systems and Intelligence squad in Berlin. You will design APIs, build scalable data pipelines, and automate commission workflows that touch field and tele-sales, partnerships, and referrals.

Ideal candidates have Go or typed-language experience, familiarity with PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Kafka, and event sourcing, and a track record building auditable, high-trust systems in fintech or payments.

Qualifications

• Backend engineer with Go or a typed language background.
• Experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts.
• Fluent with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and analytical databases (Snowflake).
• Experience with Kafka-based, event-driven systems and event sourcing.
• Proven track record building auditable, high-trust fintech or payments systems.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data across SumUp to attribute merchant actions to channels or agents.
• Define data models, API contracts, and rule definitions to automate commission workflows.
• Build the Lifecycle Event Log for cross-team use across attribution, support and sales.
• Create internal APIs and back offices to monitor and modify commissions.
• Document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for other teams.
• Establish testing, observability, and incident response best practices in the squad.
• Use AI tooling to scaffold services and draft documentation with accountability.
