Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking an Air Subject Matter Expert to lead environmental air permitting and compliance for terminals, pipelines, and fleets. This full-time role offers high visibility, strategic impact, and opportunities to influence regulatory strategy nationwide.

Based at a location flexible within MPC’s L&S ESS&PQ network, the SME will mentor Environmental Specialists, drive NSPS determinations, and help modernize permitting processes while traveling up to 25% as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with 15 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with 7 years relevant environmental experience.
• Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations with the ability to communicate impact plans to local leadership for budget development.
• Ability to review engineering designs and specifications to ensure compliance with appropriate environmental rules and regulations.
• A driver’s license is required.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
• At least 5 years of air permitting and compliance experience is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, or Environmental Management is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a key member of an experienced team of Air SMEs, with opportunities to lead initiatives, broaden technical expertise, and influence environmental strategy.
• Providing day-to-day air permitting and regulatory compliance support to field Environmental Specialists.
• Leading and supporting implementation of new and revised air regulations.
• Collaborating with other Air SMEs to expand expertise across programs.
• Performing and documenting NSPS determinations for terminal, pipeline, and marine projects.
• Leading and supporting air permit and compliance audits, and communicating insights to stakeholders.

Education
