Job summary

The New York Times is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Integrated Messaging team within Messaging Platforms in New York, NY. This role covers end-to-end direct-to-consumer messaging, from native push to new channels like WhatsApp and SMS, with a focus on performance, reliability, and developer productivity.

You will oversee a diverse technology stack, drive the technical vision, manage cross-functional engineers, and collaborate with Product, Design, and Data teams.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3+ years of engineering management experience.
• Experience leading full-stack teams delivering high-availability systems.
• Ability to balance delivery speed with platform stability and modernization.

Responsibilities

• Lead a full-stack engineering team across backend, frontend, and DevOps.
• Define and execute multi-channel growth roadmap (push, WhatsApp, SMS).
• Oversee high-availability delivery services and internal tooling.
• Ensure sub-second delivery for notifications and strong reliability.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Data to prioritize investments.
• Lead cross-team programs and represent the team in technical discussions.
• Coach and grow engineers across levels in a high-performing environment.
