Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Content Data Products team in our New York, NY office. You will collaborate with product, design, data scientists, newsroom staff, and engineers to transform NYT content into data products and APIs for internal and external use.

You will own features end-to-end, apply AI to archive data, and ensure high-quality, secure, observable systems while mentoring teammates in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Fluency in backend technologies (Go, Python, Java or similar) and SQL databases.
• Experience designing and building data backend services and APIs that other teams can build on.
• Experience with data feeds development.
• Experience with CI/CD concepts and tooling.
• Experience with infrastructure orchestration and familiarity with cloud computing platforms like GCP or AWS.
• Understanding of application and data security best practices.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as a part of a cross-functional team.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product, design, other engineers, and newsroom partners to build content data products and APIs within the NYT's publishing platform, including internal data solutions and external offerings.
• Take ownership of features or components, driving them from requirements gathering through design, implementation, QA, deployment, and monitoring.
• Use AI to process our archive and turn unstructured data into structured data, while developing a deep understanding of what we're building and how to use it.
• Ensure a high degree of code quality, security, and system observability.
• Drive architectural excellence through rigorous code reviews, mentorship, and by establishing best practices for high concurrency, data‑intensive systems.
