Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Integrated Messaging team within the Messaging Platforms group. This full-stack team builds high-throughput delivery engines for push notifications and the internal tools editors use to orchestrate communications.

Based in New York City, this hybrid role challenges you to expand into WhatsApp and SMS, guide a diverse tech stack, and partner with product, design, and data to balance feature velocity with platform stability

Qualifications

3+ years of Engineering Manager experience leading high-functioning teams.
Full-stack leadership across frontend, backend, and DevOps with production operations.
Experience driving organizational and technical transformations.
Strong coaching and people development experience.

Responsibilities

Lead a full-stack engineering team across backend, frontend, and tools.
Define technical vision and roadmap for multi-channel messaging expansion (WhatsApp, SMS).
Balance delivery services with internal tools used by editorial and product teams.
Ensure high-availability delivery and sub-second push notifications.
Collaborate with Product, Design, and Data to balance speed with platform stability.
Lead cross-team programs within the Messaging Platforms group.
Represent the team in high-level technical discussions and risk tradeoffs.
