Job summary

John Hancock is seeking a Lead Engineer to drive agentic platforms and intelligent automation across North American Wealth. You will own the agentic SDLC, raise Developer Experience, and partner across engineering, architecture, product, and risk to deliver scalable, secure production solutions.

The role combines hands-on engineering with leadership, governance, and governance to achieve measurable business outcomes in a regulated financial services environment. Hybrid work is expected in Boston.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
• Own and drive complex cross-functional initiatives and engineering leadership.
• Design and deliver distributed applications, APIs, event-driven systems, cloud-native services in Java/.NET/Python/Node.js/React/SQL.
• Establish production engineering practices across CI/CD, automated testing, security, observability, reliability.
• Design or implement AI-enabled applications, agents, or LLM-based solutions with retrieval, orchestration, tool use.
• Knowledge of AI governance, guardrails, privacy, security, risk controls for regulated environments.
• Translate business processes into reusable technical capabilities, roadmaps, and measurable outcomes.
• Strong facilitation and communication skills for workshops and executive discussions.
• Coach engineers and raise organizational capability via standards and communities.
• Bachelor's degree in CS, Engineering, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic initiatives accelerating adoption of agentic platforms and automation.
• Own design and delivery of agentic SDLC, improving Developer Experience across lifecycle stages.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver high-value agent use cases across functions.
• Develop and adopt reusable platform capabilities, architectures, patterns, tools, and integrations.
• Establish and govern engineering standards for identity, data protection, access, and lifecycle management.
• Design production-grade agentic systems with orchestration, tool use, and human-in-the-loop patterns.
• Evolve evaluation, observability, and operational practices to measure value and reliability.
• Lead workshops, labs, demonstrations, and training to build agentic capability.
• Coach engineers, build communities of practice, and scale production solutions.
