Job summary

KFI Engineers in Lexington, KY is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for the Utilities & Central Energy group to lead electrical design of power distribution, MV systems, and building power. You will perform advanced studies, prepare specs, and coordinate with teams and clients from concept through commissioning.

The role requires 10+ years of experience, PE licensure or pursuit, and travel up to 25%. The department emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and business development contributions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or similar related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of Electrical Engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineering registration or willingness to pursue this designation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the design of electrical utility generation and distribution systems.
  • Proven project experience and/or working knowledge of Process, Instrumentation, and Controls.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, Civil and Structural Engineering construction practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, NESC, ANSI/IEEE, etc.).
  • Proven ability to build strong client relationships and establish credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to present complex information to diverse audiences, synthesize ideas into actionable recommendations, and positively influence outcomes.
  • Strong planning, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and supports power distribution systems (primary requirement).
  • Designs medium-voltage and 480V power systems for industrial, utility, and building applications.
  • Designs building power and lighting systems including protective features and generators.
  • Performs power system studies using SKM PTW (load flow, short-circuit, arc flash).
  • Prepares engineering documents and equipment specifications per contract and codes.
  • Reviews and approves contractor and vendor submittals and selections.
  • Creates project plans and schedules for execution of work.
  • Develops labor and cost estimates and manages scope and budget.
  • Coordinates work with other departments, teams, and subcontractors.
  • Provides construction observation, startup, and commissioning support.
