Workday is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to act as the SME for Data Platform and Lakehouse Architecture. You will shape the data universe, building storage, compute, and governance foundations that power security operations and analytics across the enterprise.

The role emphasizes secure, scalable AWS-based lakehouse infrastructure, with a strong focus on data formats, partitioning, and cost-conscious design. You will collaborate across teams to enable fast, trusted data workflows.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in data platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, or data architecture for large-scale data lakes
• 3+ years operating Apache Iceberg or Delta Lake in production environments
• 3+ years AWS data stack experience (EMR, Athena, S3, Lake Formation)
• 3+ years using Terraform or AWS CDK for provisioning data infra
• 3+ years in modern cloud data warehouses (Snowflake/Databricks/AWS Redshift)

Responsibilities

• Lead design and evolution of our Data Lake/Lakehouse on AWS.
• Define partitioning, schema evolution, file compaction, and storage tiering for performance and cost.
• Design and maintain infrastructure as code to provision the data platform.
• Define foundational infrastructure for Data Marts and ensure scalable access patterns for BI tools.
• Architect and enforce data governance, IAM, encryption, and access controls across the lakehouse.
• Manage cost governance and capacity planning to scale with data growth.
