Job summary

WEX is seeking a Sr. Staff Data Platform Engineer to architect the enterprise data foundation. You will shape the platform as a product, building internal SDKs, controls planes, and self-service frameworks to accelerate hundreds of engineers.

You will lead in-depth decisions on Iceberg/Hudi/Delta Lake, cloud infra, and AI-driven development while mentoring teams and driving architectural excellence across WEX’s data platforms.

Qualifications

• 15+ years in software engineering and distributed systems, with at least 4 years in a principal or staff level capacity guiding platform-scale initiatives.
• Strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
• Experience in the Java/J2EE ecosystem (Spring Boot, Microservices) and Python; writes clean, testable code.
• Data platforms and APIs that move data, not just ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Deep knowledge of Iceberg, Hudi, or Delta Lake and related metadata management.
• Experience contributing to or heavily customizing open-source data projects.
• Extensive experience in cloud architectures (AWS and Azure) and modern CI/CD tooling.
• AI-native development and LLM-Ops to support AI Agent workflows.
• Leadership and ability to influence across autonomous teams.

Responsibilities

• Architect 3-5 year roadmaps for the Data Lakehouse, defining storage, compute, and metadata interactions.
• Build internal SDKs, CLI tools, and orchestration frameworks to abstract cloud complexity.
• Prototype and benchmark emerging tech to keep the platform ahead on performance and cost.
• Design compliance-by-design systems for data governance and security at scale.
• Lead AI governance and real-time ingestion for AI Agents into the Data Lake.
• Set high standards for code quality and lead architecture reviews across teams.
• Foster an engineering community and influence hiring and development paths.
