Markel Corporation is seeking an accomplished casualty claims expert with a law degree to lead the most complex/high-exposure claims. The role offers substantial autonomy and leadership to examiners and managers, with support to underwriting and collaboration across departments.

The candidate will manage large caseloads, analyze coverage, coordinate outside counsel, train staff, and present regulatory and market developments. US work authorization is required.

Qualifications

• Legal and claims expertise in Casualty
• 10+ years of claims handling and management experience
• Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license
• US work authorization required

Responsibilities

• Manage a full case load of the most complex/high exposure claims within Casualty Claims with minimal oversight and direction
• Analyze coverage, communicate coverage positions and manage related coverage litigation
• Proactively manage outside counsel to control legal strategy and expense spend
• Perform jury verdict research, negotiations and coverage analyses to reduce reliance on outside counsel
• Coordinate investigation into underlying litigation and develop resolution strategy
• Evaluate information on coverage, liability and damages to set reserves
• Negotiate and settle claims or provide recommendations for trials
• Prepare reports for underwriting, claims and senior management
• Mentor and train junior examiners and managers
• Advise underwriting on contractual wordings and legal issues
• Present to underwriting and claims on developments in coverage and US litigation
• Represent Casualty Claims in cross-departmental initiatives
• Travel to mediations, trials and conferences as required
• Oversee junior associates on the Casualty Claims team
• Adhere to Fair Claims Practices and internal quality objectives
