Job summary

The Hartford is seeking a Manager Claims to lead the Complex Claims Unit, overseeing environmental, toxic tort, asbestos and other long-tail liability matters. You will mentor a team, shape strategy on coverage and litigation, and drive high-quality outcomes with superior client service.

This role offers a hybrid or remote work arrangement with potential in-office visits; proximity to Hartford, CT or other listed office locations may be preferred. Strong leadership and analytics are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred; advanced degree or professional designation (JD, CPCU, AIC, ARM) is a plus.
• Minimum of 7 years of casualty claim experience within a property and casualty organization.
• Experience handling environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, latent bodily injury or other long-tail liability claims.
• Strong understanding of complex insurance coverage issues and multi-year claim analysis.
• Ability to evaluate liability, coverage, damages and litigation risks.
• Superior negotiation, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
• Prior management experience including staff development or project leadership.
• Ability to influence across functions and senior stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
• Experience managing high-severity litigation and coordinating with outside counsel.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team handling complex environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, and other long-tail claims.
• Provide strategic oversight on coverage, liability, damages, allocation, and litigation management.
• Develop and implement innovative claim disposition strategies.
• Monitor performance, reserving accuracy, and settlement outcomes.
• Communicate industry trends, regulatory changes, and impact on exposures.
• Coach technical staff and mentor junior claim professionals.
• Collaborate with internal partners and outside counsel to drive outcomes.
• Ensure high-quality claim handling and superior customer service.
