Job summary

Vertical Mechanical Group is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to design and engineer building automation systems (BAS) and low-voltage controls, from submittals to installation and field support. Location: Mixed Office/Jobsites in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

The role requires 5–7 years in building automation, expertise with DDC controllers, BACnet/MS‑TP/IP, and Modbus protocols, and experience with Lynxspring, JCI Facility Explorer, and Distech.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent controls engineering experience.
• 5–7 years in building automation or controls engineering with shop drawings.
• Strong knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, and DDC controllers.
• Experience with Lynxspring, JCI Facility Explorer, and Distech controls.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Visio for controls drafting.
• Understanding of low-voltage circuits, wiring, and BAS networking.
• Familiarity with ASHRAE guidelines and NEC requirements.
• Willingness to travel to DC/MD/VA region.

Responsibilities

• Develop complete controls shop drawings and submittals.
• Review drawings and specifications to determine controls scope and integration.
• Select and apply DDC controllers and network devices per project needs.
• Design BAS network architecture (BACnet, Modbus) and device addressing.
• Provide guidance to BAS programmers and field teams during installation and commissioning.
• Prepare as-built drawings and closeout documentation.
• Assist estimating with quantities and scope reviews; mentor junior engineers.
