Job summary

Edison Smart® seeks an experienced Senior BAS Controls Design Engineer to lead design and development of building automation and HVAC control systems for complex commercial and mission-critical projects. You will translate drawings into automation designs, develop submittals and equipment specifications, and design BAS architectures using BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and IP networks.

Responsibilities include FAT/SAT, QA/QC of documentation, and ensuring compliance with NEC, NFPA, UL 508A and energy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering.
  • 5+ years of BAS/HVAC controls experience.
  • Experience producing AutoCAD / AutoCAD Electrical drawings and controls submittals.
  • Knowledge of BAS/DDC architecture and networked controls.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design of HVAC and BAS.
  • Translate drawings and SOO into automation designs.
  • Develop control submittals, BOMs, and device schedules.
  • Design BAS architectures with BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and IP networks.
  • Develop control narratives, logic diagrams, sequences of operation and point mapping.
  • Design custom control panels and support FAT/SAT activities.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of drawings and documentation.
  • Ensure NEC, NFPA, UL 508A, ASHRAE 135 and energy code compliance.
  • Support startup, commissioning teams for troubleshooting controls, networking and field devices.
  • Evaluate new control hardware and technologies for improvement.
  • Contribute to internal design and CAD standards.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior BAS Controls Design Engineer to lead the technical design and development of building automation and HVAC control systems across complex commercial and mission-critical projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical design of HVAC and Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Translate mechanical and electrical drawings, specifications and Sequences of Operation (SOO) into complete, practical automation control designs.
  • Develop and review control submittals, BOMs, device schedules and equipment specifications for procurement and panel fabrication.
  • Design BAS system architectures incorporating BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and IP-based networks, integrating HVAC, lighting, metering and other building systems.
  • Develop control narratives, logic diagrams, sequences of operation and point mapping for complex mechanical systems.
  • Design custom control panels and support panel shop build verification, FAT and SAT activities.
  • Perform detailed QA/QC reviews of control drawings, submittals, panel documentation and as-built packages.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable NEC, NFPA, UL 508A, ASHRAE 135 and local energy codes.
  • Support software, installation and commissioning teams during startup, troubleshooting controls, networking, communications and field devices as required.
  • Evaluate new control hardware, sensors and technologies to improve system performance, reliability and energy efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of internal design standards, CAD standards, submittal templates and engineering best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls Engineering, or equivalent technical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in BAS, HVAC controls, MEP design, industrial controls or a related engineering environment.
  • Strong experience producing and reviewing AutoCAD / AutoCAD Electrical drawings and controls submittal packages.
  • Practical understanding of BAS/DDC architecture, field controllers, I/O, point mapping and HVAC control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and IP-based controls networks.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings and understand the interaction between HVAC equipment, controls and electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of Sequences of Operation and mechanical systems integration.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA, UL 508A, ASHRAE 135 and applicable local energy codes.
  • Excellent technical documentation, organisation, communication and problem-solving skills.
