Job summary

Close is seeking a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer for the Backend Platform, focused on empowering engineers with a robust API layer, authentication, observability, and AI-native tooling. This remote USA role involves building on Python (Flask, FastAPI) and extending DevDawg/Spice for scalable developer environments.

You will shape backend foundations, APIs, migrations, and production practices, collaborating across teams and across the org to raise the bar for speed and reliability.

Qualifications

• Seasoned Python engineer with backend web-app experience.
• Experience shipping AI-native or LLM-backed tooling.
• Strong observability, metrics, tracing and production readiness, including Sentry ownership.
• Familiarity with API design for internet-facing endpoints and scale.

Responsibilities

• Expand DevDawg and Spice for cloud development environments.
• Build the API layer with REST/GraphQL/OpenAPI and auth/permissions plumbing.
• Modernize backend framework layers and migration paths (Flask→FastAPI).
• Own production readiness, observability, and incident handling.
• Collaborate across org with infra and product teams.
